Transmission warning signs: a checklist graphic of the 6 warning signs listed under the same heading below.

Transmissions are part of the full-service work we've grown into since 1992, along with the CV joints and axles that carry power to the wheels. Many transmission complaints turn out to be something smaller than a rebuild: low or burnt fluid, a leaking seal, a faulty sensor or a software issue. We check those first, so you only pay for the repair your vehicle actually needs.

What are the signs of a transmission problem?

Slipping (the engine revs but the car doesn't speed up), delayed or harsh shifts, a shudder at steady speed, a whine or clunk, a burning smell, or red fluid under the car are the most common signs. On many newer vehicles a transmission fault also turns on the check engine light, so a computer scan is often the first step.

Do I need a new transmission?

Not always. A fluid leak, a worn mount, or a faulty solenoid or speed sensor can cause symptoms that feel like a failing transmission. We diagnose the problem, explain what we found, and give you the options and prices before any work starts. Our technicians are paid a salary, not commission, so nobody here gains from recommending the bigger job.

Should I change my transmission fluid?

Follow the interval in your owner's manual. Some manufacturers describe the fluid as "lifetime", but heat breaks fluid down, and stop-and-go Miami traffic in summer is hard on transmissions. Dark or burnt-smelling fluid is a sign it's overdue.

What does a clicking noise when turning mean?

A clicking or popping sound during sharp turns usually comes from a worn outer CV joint. A torn CV boot lets grease out and dirt in, so replacing a torn boot early can save the joint.

Transmission repair questions

How much does transmission repair cost?

It ranges widely, from a fluid service or a leaking seal to a major repair. We diagnose the problem first and give you a price before any work starts. Call with your year, make and model for a starting estimate.

Can I keep driving with a slipping transmission?

It's best not to. Slipping creates heat that can turn a small repair into a large one, and a transmission that suddenly loses drive can leave you stuck in traffic.

Is transmission work covered by your warranty?

Most repairs come with our 1-year warranty. We'll go over the coverage for your specific job before we start.

What is a CV joint?

A constant-velocity joint on the drive axle. It lets the front wheels steer and move with the suspension while they're being powered. Clicking during turns is the classic sign of a worn one.
